Default Channeling in PvE?

Hi

I was wondering if [skill]channeling[/skill] would be worth taking on a monk in PvE?

I mean the monsters seems to rush the backline unless your running some strict build (tank, nuker, ss, healer bla bla).

Usually I'd say no because you want to kite as much as possible. The hard hits of late PvE mobs, should you take them, outweigh the energy gain pretty heavily.

However, in some areas the battle involves so many mobs and becomes so clustered you might have an opportunity to really make use of it. I'd recommend some sort of party protection, possibly Save Yourselves (on other characters), just so the penalty of bad positioning is reduced.

Also, keep in mind what zones are going to remove enchantments.

Ideally shouldn't. The front line and mid-liners should body block them and you should run out their range if they attacked you. If you on other hand seem to be surrounded by enemies, then it's a decent skill.

Frontlines don't match up. Each side's frontline is in the opposing side's mid/backline. PvE aggro lines are messy anyways, so there's a chance to pick up some energy.

That said, I still prefer just kiting rather than trying to be a heroic channeltank.

not sure how you agro but when i agro its clean with little to no leaks, so at most you may get like 1 or 2 energy and its no worth the 5 energy, and yes kiting is better it will save you more energy.

I aggro by going from point A (start) to point B (the mobs). Obviously if you're playing to catch aggro then channeling will never give you a good return, but for players that just charge in, you can get a bit off it if you really wanted to and had a lot of partywide defense.

I have played monk extensively in PvE and I'm tempted to agree with the OP. With a PUG this is a bad idea, in general no matter how incompetent the group is, the frontline or midline usually catches all of the aggro. PUG players in my experience often sacrifice any kind of self heal or defensive ability for two reasons; many groups flame players for taking any non-offensive ability because they want to roll the area, also because they feel having a human monk makes them invincible, and besides, if they die it's the "monk's fault". As such, you'll be needing to pour most of your casting time into healing Leeroy over there.

When playing with H/H, there is no real midline and as a result, many of the mobs will go straight to the back and attack your casters. Unless you're doing extensive flagging, you can gain a significant amount of energy from [[channeling] which seriously helps in an all H/H party. As for taking "big hits", if you're taking enough that you can't simply out heal every few seconds, then you either pulled too much or you can afford to use a prot or two on yourself. In the higher tiered areas of PvE, [[protective spirit] [[spirit bond] [[shield of absorption] will save you a lot of worry and energy. The [[healer's boon] builds that people run are hideously inefficient builds, and running a hybrid prot build (or all prot using your elite for [[zealous benediction] or [[shield of regeneration]) is much more effective and nearly mandatory without another human healer.

As for your [[glimmer of light] build, I think you should put consider using some defensive skills as [[physical resistance] or [[elemental resistance] when going though prophecies, and taking something like [[distortion] in general. A low spec [[protective spirit] or [[spirit bond] will save you from most of the nukes, just worry about the melee hits.

It has some use in PvE but not on monks. We use it on certain "Tank" builds.

I bring it sometimes when I know I'll be in a situation with a thin frontline or when I know the mobs are thick enough to justify its use. Other than that, ZB and inspired hex works just fine for me.

What are the usual monk energy management skills? I've been using pure prot and prot hybrids from when boon protting was still effective. When ZB came out I switched over and haven't looked back since. What do you guys use?

I prefer to kite, especially in HM, where getting hit by the mobs in front is probably going to kill you if you don't have any prots. You'd probably save more energy just by kiting, especially since the mobs are going to hit harder in high-end PvE, which makes getting close enough to use Channeling a very risky affair on a monk. My friend and I prefer to throw BR on a necro if we think we're actually going to need energy boosts.

If you're playing with a PUG, the mobs are probably going to encounter your teammates first. There may be a couple that slip past and run to the back, but it's not worth taking Channeling for.

I'd rather have good positioning.

The problem with Channeling is that you have to be in quite a bad position for it to be truly effective. As a caster you want to kite (when not casting) as much as possible. Also wanding when not in danger or anything is cool too. Minimal, not very effective but I like to do it.

@The Iron Saint:

If I wanted energy management, I'd use GoLE. Otherwise, I'd run another prot or whatever, but I'd probably be running Sever Artery. Please note that I do not recommend using it, I just use it for the lolz. If playing seriously, GoLE, another prot or maybe another heal.

I really wouldn't use it if you are going to be in backline using heals and it depends on what the spawn is like.

that is used in ha to channel tank mostly, without the last skill ofc which is pve only,if u want mad energy id sugest [Divine Spirit] or [Selfless Spirit] ,i prefer selfless spirit but prbolem with it is that it ends when u cast a spell on yourself
if u couple one of the 2 with [Air of Superiority]it may get recharged tus alowing for more energy free spaming,u can always gets striped of it tho so it isnt a to reliable source of energy

Tell you the truth I wouldn't bring [[channeling] into PvE, but since it's PvE and it's easy, go ahead!

If you're asking mobs to hit you for your energy managment then should at least reduce the damage - [protective spirit] at the very least least has to be on your bar.

Post once you've had a play - be interested to see if [air of superiority] helped kept up with your [Glimmer of Light].
